Sew a Neckbone Pillow

One of my favorite products of all time is this neck pillow. No kidding!  Who would have thought that a dented pillow would make someone happy!  There have been several of these floating around our home for the last 10+ years and I will tell you, they bring comfort to us all - in different ways.  Different from a regular square or rectangular pillow, here are some reasons to LOVE a neck pillow:

  1. Between the Knees support - Are you a side sleeper?  Do you need to help relieve a bit of pressure from a surgery, tension from restless legs or pregnancy?
  2. Road Tripping pillow - the pillow can fit in between the crack of the car door and the side of the seat. Easy to store in the car or trunk since it isn't a large square.
  3. Nap & Relaxation Time on the sofa, beach or picnic - Do you prefer not to lay flat when resting? This pillow will raise your neck. Do you get neck cramps and prefer to have a fluffier pillow?  This may help as your neck lays right in the divet helping to alleviate neck pain.
3 simple cutouts of the pattern and you are on your way to a new form of comfort.
Materials needed for this project are:
  • 1/2 - 3/4 yard of 44" fabric (quilting cotton, home decor, etc.) - depends on fabric selection
  • 2/3 yard of fabric, or less, for tabs (depends on if you do 1 or 2 tabs)
  • coordinating thread
  • Medium bag of hypoallergenic Polyfil
  • Other basic sewing tools (scissors, pins, seam ripper, etc.)

I used a pattern from Sew 4 Love. Get the Dog Bone Pillow pattern and get to sewing!

You can watch the video on how to construct the pieces here.  Just be sure to flip the pieces when you cut them, as shown on the bottom of the pdf.  In 20-30 minutes you'll have a good pillow that will last for years to come!  The more you fill it with the Polyfill, the firmer it will be. Enjoy!
