Sew a Tea Bag Packet

What a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys tea and carries it around places with them!  There are people that do that!  Like me! : )  This is a cool project to sew for them.  You could also fill these slots with store royalty cards, or gift cards, if you have a batch crowding your wallet.

This can be made into a special, personalized gift; not just for the fabric selection this time, rather for the selection of tea bags that you can place inside of the tea packet.  Now, that's taking a gift to the next level and it will only take 20 minutes of your time!

Gather materials you will need for this project.  If you need to watch the video to follow along, you can watch it here.

Materials and measurements needed for this tea packet are as follows:

3 Inner Pocket Fabrics - 7 X 5.5

3 Pieces of interface measuring 7 X 2 3/4

1 Outer Fabric - 7 X 6.5

1 Inner Fabric - 7 x 6.5

2 Pieces of ribbon - about 8" long.

1 piece of Pellon 809 Interface 7 x 6.5

Thread

Ruler

Follow along on video or follow these simple instructions:

Adhere interface to the back of the outer fabric then set aside.

Gather the pocket pieces (the fabrics measuring 7" x 5.5").  For each pocket, fold in half, iron a crease and iron on interface to one half of the pocket.  (Be sure to repeat on other pockets).

Top stitch each pocket piece 1/8" from top of pocket.

Place one pocket one inch from the top of lining fabric.

Baste across bottom of pocket.  (This will be what holds the tea bags in place.)

Place the next pocket 1 1/2" down from top pocket (Stitch line).  Baste in place.

Place the last pocket so that the bottom of the pocket's raw edges lines up with the raw edges of the lining fabric. Stitch in place.

Find the middle of the fabric.  To do this, fold over fabric so that the left and right sides touch each other.  Either finger crease, or iron. Open back up.

Sew a straight line down the middle of that creased line.

Prep for closure by adding ribbons to each side, left and right side. Baste stitch on to lining on each side.  Be sure to place the remainder of ribbons inside and pin.  This is done to ensure you do not sew the ends of the ribbons to the seams that you will need to tie together in order to close the packet!

Prepare to finish and close. Place right sides of fabric together. Pin in several places.

Sew around all 4 sides, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the packet holder so you are able to turn the packet right side out.

Use a chopstick to poke out corners of fabric.  Fold in bottom portion that was left open. Iron to help flatten it out.

Top stitch around all four sides.  This will close up the bottom hole as well as give a finishing touch to the tea bag packet.

That's all there is to it!  You now have a tea bag packet.

For an additional gift item, consider making mug rugs, or fabric coasters to go along with the tea packet.  You can find the tutorial for the quick fabric coasters in this video. It's a great way to personalize your gift.
